A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring several others. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers, about 24 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of two tectonic plates.The earthquake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected areas. Several buildings collapsed or were severely damaged, including a hospital and a shopping center. Roads and bridges were also damaged, cutting off access to some areas. Power outages were reported in several towns and cities.
Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution against aftershocks. PHIVOLCS has issued a warning that more aftershocks are possible in the coming days. People in the affected areas are advised to remain alert and follow the instructions of local authorities.
