Church Leader Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel Attacked
Prominent Leader of Assyrian Orthodox Church Stabbed During Live-Streamed Sermon
Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, a prominent conservative leader of the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the East, was stabbed during a live-streamed sermon on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, Australia. Another priest was also injured in the attack. Riot police were called in to disperse angry locals after a 15-year-old was arrested in connection with the attack.
Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel is a prominent leader of an ultra-conservative faction of the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the East. His affiliation with the Assyrian Church of the East distinguishes him from other Assyrian Orthodox leaders who are affiliated with the Chaldean Catholic Church.
Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher called the stabbing "a cowardly act of violence" and offered his prayers for the victims and their families.
